Foot pedal woes

I had to run out and buy a new transcriber this morning. The old one
had been dying a slow and painful death for a few months, and this
morning it just decided to give up for good. I got home with the new
one, plugged everything in, and sat down to work. Foot pedal doesn't
work. I unplugged everything and plugged in again, making sure
everything was connected properly. Foot pedal still doesn't work. The
transcriber itself works just fine, as it should since it's brand new.
Can anyone give me any ideas other than yelling at Panasonic about this?
I tried connecting my old pedal that was dying along with the
transcriber, and this one doesn't work with the new transcriber either.
I can work by keeping the tape playing and rewinding manually, but
that's a pain in the *** that I don't want to put up with for too long.
