Re: Total knee replacement

I was told the rehab was very necessary. If it were offered at home, that
would probably be good, too.

Thanks for the details, Neal! I'm curious...was the rehab facility
necessary, or was that because of your complications? It's my
understanding that rehab people will be coming to the house for
several weeks, but I haven't had my education appointament yet, so I
dunno for sure.

Thanks to all--I appreciate your support and comments. This is going
to be HUGE in my life as I've been restricted physically for more than
15 years.

Anne,

I had a total knee replacement on 11/1/05 after having surgery for a torn
lateral meniscus, then tripping over a cat and fracturing the tibial
plateau. I didn't know it was fractured and walked on it for three weeks
before the doctor saw it.

My surgery was complicated a little because of developing an infection in
the knee replacement and having to stay in the hospital until that was
cleared up. Then I spent 15 days in a rehab hospital, for a total of 23
days. For me, the rehab was critical in getting the motion back and
learning how to properly use the TKR.

The pain from the three times daily rehab was bad at times, but necessary.
The rehab taught everything from learning how to dress myself again,
normal
household things like getting food out of a refrigerator, to balance,
walking up and down stairs and curbs, to how to get in and out of a car.
I
think they got me out of there because they were tired of seeing me charge
up and down the halls with the walker, singing the Dukes of Hazzard theme
sone at the top of my lungs. I am NOT a singer! I had been in a
wheelchair
for several months before the surgery.

I used a walker for support and safety after getting home, but I don't
remember the exact length of time. I remember having the walker at a
concert and at church a couple of times, so I think it was about two weeks
I
used it.

I was fortunate to have a home with a walk-in shower, and had a shower
chair
and toilet riser in place when I got home. The rehab exercises and
training
gave me the strength and knowledge to take care of myself at home and
needed
no assistance.

I hope this is useful to you.

With my sedentary job and lack of mobility due to both horrible knees,
I'm not in good shape at all, but I'm determined to make this work!
There's no way I would choose to go on with this chronic pain, and I
can't stay on these pain meds forever. I will be the most compiant
patient this doc has ever had...8-)

Hey, gang, who on here has had a total knee replacement? How
long

I haven't, but I've got two cousins who had TKRs in the past two
years. I really think it depends on how "sturdy" and in shape
one is before having the surgery as to how well he/she is going
to convalesce.

One cousin had her first one at age 79 and then the other at age
80. She did fine for both, but she said she was slower on the
recuperation time on the second one because she got an infection.

My other cousin is a factory worker, same age as me (53). He had
one knee done, then the other was done six months later. He went
to his doc the next week, and the doc was so impressed with his
progress that he got his camcorder and had my cousin walk around
so he could record his "amazing progress." My crazy cousin then
went out and rode his motorcycle. No problems.

I think it just depends on the person. Either way, both cousins
said it was definitely worth it--each time.
