Re: Nonmedical transcription

Many years ago, a hospital asked us to transcribe the minutes of a
meeting recorded on a microcassette. They gave us a list of the meeting
participants.

We were handling their MT work, and as a favor, we took that "meeting"
gig thinking it would be a piece of cake ...... BIG mistake !!!!

That one-hour tape took me several hours to transcribe !!!! The sound
quality was horrible. They obviously placed the microcassette player in
the middle of the table, and it was virtually impossible to determine
who was speaking what? In many instances, there were two or three
people speaking at the same time.

We charged them 21 cents per minute (which was a bargain in my
opinion), and vowed NEVER to take that gig ever again, unless they pay
us a small fortune.

I wouldn't transcribe a meeting for any money I don't think. I think I
did one three-person interview once. I've done one-on-one and sometimes
they are recording in say a crowded bar. HELLO! Anyway, from what I've
learned from my non-MT friend is that charging per audio hour is
generally the accepted method. I just quoted a fee based on that to
someone and I think they dropped over of shock - not a word since.
Perhaps they misunderstood it as rate per hour typing LOL. Anyway, it
certainly is true that any quote should either specify that it depends
on sound quality being good and if it is not, the rate goes up. Of
COURSE, they are going to say the sound is fine.

As far as turn around, of course, like anything, MT or not, that's
something you have to negotiate. I would never guarantee a given TAT
without seeing what the work entails. They may reassure you how easy it
is when it may be a lot more complicated than they make it seem.
