Re: Can anyone make a living at 8 CPL?

I can only speak for EMR, as I work with one client through his EMR--working
directly on his computer linked with mine.

I hate working in it because his program has its own word processing
program, and it stinks and it is slower. Fortunately my client realized
this, and authorized me to increase my price accordingly with a little
experience with the program. I have to slow down my typing for my word
expander to work, which is the worst of it. Some software allows the use of
an outside word processing program such as Word or Word Perfect, but
unfortunately this program does not!

Anyway, EMR does not necessarily lose us jobs, though if the client is not
aware of the drawbacks, it could mean a cut in pay.

When I was looking for some part-time work recently I was offered less than
7 cpl--6. something! With 18 years doing this, this is the best I could do.
I really need another good client, but I won't work for that, and even the
smaller local practices are sending their work to India!

I do think our job is going down the tubes because the pay is so low that it
will not attract the kind of people who can do this work well. I am too old
to change careers, and do not know what I would change to, though I am
giving some thought to seeing if I could teach sewing, quilting, embroidery,
knitting or crocheting. When we move over to the "pool house" and my son
moves into the main house, I will have a separate "craft room" and I could
teach there. I could do it at the Y if I would do it for free, but I don't
have time to donate, and I need the money!

As long as my 2 remaining clients stay with me, I will do this, but I will
not work for 8 cents a line.

Just curious. I was visiting MTStars and looked at job listings and
noticed
that if anyone posted a CPL rate, it was 8 CPL. To me, that's a starting
rate. A fairly low one, but seems to be the average. But is anyone making
a
real living at that rate of pay?

One of the questions on the survey posted on MTExchange.com asks about
improvements we'd like to see. I sure would like to see rates of pay go
up,
but that would mean clients would pay more and they won't. Is the rate of
pay that is showing on (at least) MTStars related to offshore outsourcing
and getting cut rate prices for an inferior product?

With the need for legible medical records, will our profession survive or
will EMR and speech wreck take over? I know this has been the portention
for some time, but it seems to be in the works more and more lately.

I must say, I'm bummed to see what's happening to the MT business. Why
would anyone even begin to get into this?
