Re: Can anyone make a living at 8 CPL?

But, what about the investment? Granted I can't earn as much per hour in an
outside job as I could with a good dictator even at 8 cpl, but I would not
have to have a server, a computer (and my laptop so I can work away from
home), the right software, backups for everything, etc. My hourly rate
should cover that investment--plus for years I picked up and delivered which
took time outside of the computer work. I really do not NEED my cell phone,
my static IP, my fax, my copier, my server, etc. I'm sorry, but 8 cpl
doesn't cut it. About the most I would expect to earn as a good
administrative assistant is about $12 to $15 per hour, and most do not get
that much. Saying I need to get a minimum of $25 per hour for my computer
time as an MT may sound like a lot if you don't figure the expenses of doing
business--including such things as double social security, etc., if you are
self-employed, which I am. When you say you could make a decent living at 8
cpl I do not think you are figuring the overhead.

I never made much more than 8 cpl during my whole MT career. I did
make a bit more briefly towards the end. The point of what I'm
saying, though, is that I made a very good living the whole time I was
doing MT, without making much more than 8 cpl. Granted, I didn't work
for myself; I subcontracted or worked as an employee for services, but
I was always able at that rate to make a more than decent hourly
wage. Hourly-wise, in fact, I'm making less now as an attorney!

Everyone's definition of "living" on 8 cpl is
different. If you're trying to keep up with the
Joneses, it won't be enough. I could be happy with 8 cpl.

I certainly think that in comparison to most other lines of work, when
you consider the level of education required as compared to the
possible hourly wage (given, of course, that you're relatively fast
and competent), even at 8 cpl a person can make a decent hourly rate
that they can't make with the same level of education many other
places. To be a truly good transcriptionist, of course, one has to
have a large base of knowledge and the innate talent, but it still
affords a person an opportunity to make a higher wage than most other
available lines of employment. It's what kept me doing it for as long
as I did, and it's what kept me doing it through law school. There
just wasn't anything else I could do for the same number of hours a
day that would earn me the same amount of money.

I had the same overhead as anyone has, and most of the time was
working as an IC and had the whole tax issue to deal with. As a
subcontractor, you don't have to have a server or many of the other
pieces of equipment listed, and don't have to deliver. If you're
working on your own accounts, there is some overhead not present for
those of us who work for larger services, but that's a horse of a
different color.
