Re: Can anyone make a living at 8 CPL?

What they're doing is absolutely cheeky, but you still have a choice. Drop
your rate to keep their business, convince them why you're worth the money,
or give them up as a client.

By their rates, if you mean the rate they charge patients, they sure can.

They can raise their raise but tell you to lower yours? (scratching head)

How's about, you'll lower your rates if they'll do the same.

That's not even a good response, much less a practical one.

I have posted this before, but it may be pertinent to this thread.

I had a very good orthopedic clinic with three surgeons and a P.A. I
was charging 10 cents per line, picking up tapes and delivering the
transcribed, printed out reports.

A newbie that I had interviewed previously contacted them and undercut
my line price substantially, offering to do the work for 6 cents a
line. They took her up on the offer, and I was out of a good account.

Ten months later, they called me up and asked me to do their work
again - the newbie's work was substandard, and they had to do too much
correcting. I agreed and took over the account again.

They had never complained about my price in the 10 years previously,
but apparently the 6 cents per line had spoiled them, even though it
was poor quality work. They complained now and wanted me to lower my
rate. After about a year, they again changed transcription services
and went with another local service.

I believe the low rate was the reason for the discontent, and it was
from an American newbie, not from overseas.

The willingness (or ability) to pay top dollar for top quality has
diminished. There's no shortage of work, but after almost 40 years
in this business I'd rather do something else than make a third of
what I'm currently making. Some of the doctors with whom I worked
for 20+ years decided (or were forced into deciding) that they'd
rather pay less for lesser quality.

Margie

Exactly, which, IMO, means that rates overall have declined or
remained
stagant. While there may be one or two clients who will still pay
top
dollar for quality work, there are those who would rather get cheap
crap
and save money.
