Jeanne,
I bought one from a local electronics store -- a small piece, just as
you described. Unfortunately, it seems to have a problem because I'm
not getting full volume from both channels, only one, so it's going
back to the store for testing and I'll keep trying. It was $20. If
it will work properly, it will do just what I need. I had no idea
that turntables were so obsolete that you need an additional piece of
equipment to use them. The good news is that this preamp can also
supposedly be hooked up between my turntable and my PC and I can turn
vinyl into digital using software! Now that's exciting (assuming I
ever have the time to do it). Thanks for the, er, input. <g>

Margie, did you ever find one? Years ago, I recall buying preamps from
RadioShack for $10-15--not a big component deal, but a little box you
run RCA cables between turntable and receiver/amplifier. I probably have
them, but as they're undoubtedly buried in the garage or attic (an
all-weekend project), I suspect it would be simpler if you could still
buy them there.

PS
Actually had the presence of mind to look before hitting Send--they do
indeed still sell them, though they now retail for $22.99:

Thanks, Ed. I actually found a site called phonopreamp.com, and it
says basically the same thing you're saying. I will look for
something reasonably cheap and if you hear loud '60s music coming from
up north, it'll probably be me, blasting away.
