Man did I have a bad weekend.

You all know that we had an aged mare here, my daughter's show jumper,
long retired. She had been doing pretty well overall after coming back
from where she was boarded, but she was far from the girl I sent over
to that place. Of course she was pretty old, too, and not being worked
so that her muscle tone was gone. She had been a real athlete in her
day.
She wasn't that much of a looker anymore, but I had worked hard getting
her back in halfway decent shape. She was bright-eyed and bushy tailed,
nickered at me when I went outside, trotted around and stuff - got into
the feed room while I was trying to dish up her feed. Nearly the same
old Jane.
Robin went down to feed her on Saturday morning and she was down. She
called me, in hysterics (I was in the car on my way home) and I went
down there and we got her up, but man was she sick. We were about 80%
sure it was colic, so we started that routine and called the vet.
Called my friend Dee, who has horses AND is a vet tech. She was on her
way with a shot of banamine but she wasn't home when I called her.
We really thought she would be okay. She was up, she pooped, etc.
Actually she already had pooped so that worried me some, because I was
afraid it might not be a simple case of colic.
THEN she started going downhill, right in front of our eyes. She was
ataxic, crazy-acting, we had to physically restrain her to keep her
from walking right through the fence. It was truly horrible. Dee got
there and gave her a shot of banamine, but it didn't realy help.
By the time the vet FINALLY got there, she was in terrible, terrible
shock and pain. I hope I never see anything like that again. Daughter
was sobbing. Friends were all there. An awful thing. I talked to the
vet and he told me what I already knew, that we COULD try to save her,
but it would probably not work. She was in terrible shock, dripping
sweat even from her ankles.
I talked to Robin and told her that I thought it was time to do the
responsible, loving thing. She said her good-byes - telling her to
watch out for Peggy up there (riding teacher who died in 2000 was rough
on Jane, LOL).
It just broke my heart.
I sent Robin away and we put her to sleep. It was awful, awful, awful,
though she didn't suffer once he gave her a shot and she did die
peacefully. When he gave her the first shot that put her down, she
fell, which was not pleasant to watch. She never struggled, though, and
she died with her head in my lap, being loved on and talked to.
But that night, we already had plans to go watch a Razorbacks game at
the bar, and then hear our friend's band. It was me and Ted, Fred and
Robin. We did it, even though we didn't feel great.
All her Pony Club friends showed up at the bar. That's how Pony Club
friends are. She doesn't see them anymore, but they are always there
for each other. They're all grown up now, but they have been friends
since they were children.
We lived through it, but I'm NOT doing it again. Never!
