Sounds like a good upper body workout. I use weight machines and a few
free weights at my gym. I notice they have this weights shaped like
balls with a handle on them, and people do the kind of moves described
in your workout, gets the upper body muscles working in many
directions.

Those are kettlebells. They originated in Russia and are used by their
special forces units.

The basic idea is the same but kettlebells are much more expensive and
you really can't use them for anything besides working out.

I think the shape of the sledge hammer and its handle is ergonomically
(what word did we use before ergonomic?) better in regards to different
movements and effectiveness.

Now I just need to stick with it.

Interesting...don't think Shovelglove will put Nautilus (makers of
Bowflex) out of business anytime soon, but it makes a whole lotta
common sense to me. And heck, the $25 it takes to buy one is pretty low.
I can imagine taking a trip to Goodwill to buy the cheapest most hideous
sweater you can find in the store to wrap it with too, maybe for a buck or
two. Not bad for under $30. :)

Even cheaper than that if you use some old holey socks to wrap around it
like I did.

I've been working out with it daily for a couple of weeks now and the
results are just amazing. I've got more strength and definition in my upper
body after these two weeks than I ever had with working out at Gold's gym.
Of course, I wasn't doing that on a daily basis either. Working out with
the hammer is really fun, which I not an adjective I usually associate with
strength work.

I've discovered that gyms don't work for me. For one thing, I like to just
spontaneously work out whenever I feel like it, which is something I can
easily do at home, and I also prefer to get my aerobic workout outdoors. I
really dislike sweating indoors with a bunch of other sweaty people. It's
boring and I miss the sun and fresh air.
