Low AFI: Thoughts, experiences?

So I went to the perinatologist today and had a biophysical profile
done. Mr. Wiggles is doing well from all of those indicators, the
nonstress tests are quite reactive, and his movement is very good.
However, they say that my fluid level is still at 4.3, and I'm to come
back tomorrow for an appointment and possible admission to the
hospital. Doctor is also talking about delivering him (by C-section,
no less, because he's *** down), as if that's just a done deal and
the best thing to do. I'm only at just over 31 weeks!
I've read quite a bit about it, and it doesn't seem like delivery is
just the automatic choice for low amniotic fluid, particularly when
the baby is otherwise doing very well. Obviously I'm going to be
talking seriously with the doctor about the wisdom of this tomorrow,
but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem and
has any thoughts to throw in.
The nurse at my regular ob/gyn said that "they don't really think
twice at 31 weeks; he'll be fine." I think they SHOULD think twice -
better in than out if he's otherwise doing well. I recognize the risk
of cord compression but I can't imagine that that alone would justify
this.
Can you tell I'm freaking out just a little? -- Sandi
