One thing to remember is that when you are flying with an instructor,
he will keep things from getting out of hand. If need be, he'll handle
altitude and speed, and let you concentrate on heading. Once you start
getting heading down, he'll start making you take care of altitude,
etc.
If you have a good, experienced instructor!
My second instructor, (don't remember what happened to the first one - I
think he decided retirement was better than trying to teach me) was a young
guy, a pretty new instructor, I think. He told me to take off, then turn
left. He didn't tell me when to turn left, and after roaring down the
runway, steering that thing with my feet, I turned left shortly after it
left the runway. That musta been a bit too soon, 'cause there was a hanger
right in front of us!
I guess he must have missed the flight instructor part about screaming, as
he just sat there with his eyes very wide open, while I tried to miss the
hanger. I stomped on the right pedal and cranked the steering wheel plumb
to the right, then left, then right, then left, stomping on opposite pedals
at the same time. After fishtailing several times, the little Cessna
decided to go straight and climbed away from all the obstacles. I tried to
nonchalantly ask him where to turn left, but he suggested a right turn this
time.
We the flew out to a practice area and did something - I really don't
remember it much - I was more in the mood to clean out my pants than
anything else.
My next flight instructor....
