It is said that the Saluki is the fastest mammal on earth at distances of
more than 3 miles. I know a few years back they held the world record of
dogs at the mile. They will beat a Greyhound over distance any time. It is
amazing to watch my two run--now you see them now you don't! We have 5
well-fenced acres so they have lots of room.

That same program--it ran for 2 hours--also did intelligence experiments,
and found dogs to be far more intelligent than previously thought. They
also did some of the same experiments with wolves. The dogs picked up
subtle signals from humans that the wolves did not get! When they
covered the person's eyes, the dogs did very poorly. I had a sheltie
that I swore could read my mind. They also said dogs could understand
165 words or possibly more--not all dogs, of course. My older Saluki is
one of the most "verbal" dogs I have owned. She's very good at charades!

That's very interesting.

On the subject of sight hounds, I used to think our terriers were pretty
fast but now I just think they're quick.

A sight hound on the chase is something to behold.
