Re: Warning (for Gisele) Contains anti-liberal material

I wasn't referring to you in particular. Actually, there have been a few
people I've met IRL recently who brought this issue home to me. Nicest
people you could meet--as long as you're white, or even Hispanic. Since I'm
white and my BF is Hispanic, I didn't have any reason to find out
immediately what their attitudes were toward blacks, and I was absolutely
shocked when I did. No, that kind of behavior doesn't excuse the kind of
things that were said in Wright's sound bites (BTW, is that supposed to be
"bites" or "bytes"? I'm always confused on that one), but it made me
realize that we haven't come as far in extinguishing racism as I'd always
assumed we had. That really saddens me.

Also, have you read or seen Wright's sermon in total? While still
controversial, the full context brings the tone down quite a bit. It's only
a few seconds of the sermon that get shown on TV, the ones most likely to
create an uproar. You know how the media work; during a hurricane, they
find the biggest puddle that they can, and they all cluster around it to
report how horrible conditions are. It's much the same with this.

Anne,

I have no problem with cultural differences. This country is made up of
so many different cultures it will make anyone's head spin. What I have a
problem with is any person who tries to blame all of their ills on someone
or something, and doesn't even try to get past it. Wright's hate-filled
sermons disgusted me. He's supposed to be a minister, for God's sake.
