Re: OT - Just what people need!

Incidentally, Samantha, Splenda does not spike my sugar, although I have
also heard from other diabetics they have had a problem with it, and others
say no. I bake my own bran muffins for breakfast, Splenda, high fiber,
banana and nuts in them (and bananas are high in sugar), and An hour later
my blood sugar is fine. But, about the only time I use any sugar substitute
is for breakfast--in my coffee, and what is in the bran muffin. The rest of
the day I just watch the carbs. Once or twice a week I may have a diet
gingerale which is NutraSweet, but I really drink water as my beverage most
of the time and in cold spells herbal tea. I have always been a milk
drinker, but too many carbs, too many calories. I do take calcium. Of
course I've been dieting to lose weight for more than 2 years--slow going,
but I have lost nearly 50 pounds--20 more to go. My diabetes is type 2 and
I have kept it under control with low-carb dieting and weight loss. In fact
my A1C comes back nondiabetic now for over a year.

Does Splenda affect you? I much prefer that to NutraSweet. No
aftertaste that I can detect, and I haven't heard any real evidence of
problems with it.

So far I am okay with Splenda, but I hear that it can make blood sugar
spike in diabetics, so I am careful not to overdo because diabetes and
other endocrine disorders run in my family.
