Not surprising you'd feel that way, Phyllis, and of course you're right
on a strict biologic vis-a-vis XX or XY chromosomes. However, that
issue is that as we learn more about it, there is far more to it than
that. I don't know what it feels like to be a man, but I can't imagine
knowing I am a man then looking in the mirror and seeing a woman. Male
and female brains differ and some of that may be related to how much
testosterone exposure the fetus has in the womb. I suspect being gay may
be related to something like that not yet understood. I sure don't know
why I'm attracted to men, but I suspect there is a little more involved
than just being told I was a girl and I'd grow up to marry a man some
day.
I've watched some documentaries on the sex reassignment issue following
these people. They certainly are just as sane as anyone else and have
just known for their entire lives. If it was merely a matter of what
genitals one possessed, why are there now issues with children born with
ambiguous genitalia who were surgically made into whatever sex the
surgeons apparently thought was closest. Horrible for these kids when
they hit puberty.
