Re: OT - What do you think of Senator McCain's latest tactic?
Ann,

It's very, very interesting. I didn't know how much I didn't know. The names
are sometimes hard to keep straight, but then I recognize some of them: Deng
Xiaoping, Zhou Enlai, etc. I hate to admit this, but I knew virtually
nothing of Mao Zedong, how he came to power, or what he did. I've read lots
of books about the "former" China, but I never even wondered... when did
that change to communism, and how? I was ignernt. The author, Jung Chang,
has since written a biography of Mao, which I saw at the book store and
considered buying for one second, but it was a huge book, and I doubt that
it would hold my interest that long. I might be wrong, though. I do love
biographies. It was just so big. Anyway, I figure she is very knowledgable.
She was a follower of him, and has spent her live researching.
Jung Chang's grandmother was actually a concubine and had her feet bound.
That would be the same generation as my grandmother. Very interesting.

That sounds like really interesting reading. I'll have to look for that
book.

I am currently reading "Wild Swans". It is the story of 3 generations of
Chinese women (true story), and the woman writing it is about my age. She
was born and raised in China during the Cultural Revolution of Mao, and
her mother and father were both communists and high up in the party. What
Mao did to that country was amazing, (the regime before him was bad, and
the people saw the communists as saviors, but they didn't know how bad it
could get) and I see the U.S. slipping and sliding toward "The Government"
taking care of us, just as was Mao's dream. I never knew the extent of it,
and this was going on when I was a young girl. The Chinese were not
allowed to even have their own food to cook! It was against the law! They
all had to eat in the "canteen" and thousands upon thousands of people
starved to death. The funny part is that this lady says that if she didn't
like something and didn't want to eat it the adults told her, "think of
all the poor capitalist children in American who don't have enough food to
eat!" HA! A trick used by parents worldwide, I guess!

I think the trans fats thing is ridiculous, too. Not as serious as
freedoms infringed upon by the Patriot Act, maybe, but all the same, I
detest being looked upon as not being competent to make my own judgments
about what I will or won't eat.
Incidentally, I've never been investigated by the government, but I
still see the Patriot Act as freedom infringement. Call me paranoid,
but I have no faith in the government to use the Patriot Act only as a
means of hunting down terrorists.

California has just taken away another freedom from those eating in
their state. They are outlawing transfats. Not suggesting you
shouldn't eat them, not warning of their dangers, not giving you the
choice of eating them or something else, but actually outlawing a food
product, removing your freedom of choice.
Those who agree transfats are bad for us might not see the loss of
freedom, as those who have never been investigated by the government
don't see the Patriot Act as the loss of freedom. I don't think
transfats rise the level of terrorism though.

When I mention damaging the Constitution and Bill of Rights, what's in
my head is the Patriot Act. I can't believe that we just willingly
handed our rights over to the government. The founding fathers of
this country must be spinning in their graves.
