Re: OT - What do you think of Senator McCain's latest tactic?

Many years ago I was asked to judge a school essay contest. I was expressly
instructed not to take off for spelling or grammar errors, that it was the
ideas they were looking for.

When I was in school no matter how good that composition was, if you left
out a comma or misspelled a word there were points off! I'm glad my grammar
teacher was a good one. An idea is no good if you cannot express it and
write it coherently.

((I agree Kathy, the more they control the more they get what THEY
want, hence
the dumbing down of our children. Education is where it starts.))

Susan, one of the friends I've made on Writing.com just got her
Masters in creative writing. She teaches elementary school English and
has to follow a rigid outline of how the children should be taught.
The techniques she mentioned do NOT stimulate a child's imagination
and creativity, which I find very sad.

I'm already seeing this dumbing down in some email reviews of my
stories. Hoping the poorly written emails don't reflect the entries
in their portfolios, I always check them out. The stories are just as
bad, filled with misspelled words and incorrect or missing
punctuation. I'd say at least 90 percent of these people are
youngsters, either still in grammar or high school. In a few of their
reviews, they seem amazed my stories have no errors. You'd think kids
would know about the use of a spellchecker, wouldn't you?
