The family in each episode is spirited off to some other location,
often to Disneyland/world or wherever, so it's not like they're
standing around in the neighbor's yard watching the process.

As to how much they are kept in the loop as to what's going on (i.e.,
that the house is not being remodeled, but, rather, demolished and
built from the ground up ... either can occur, IIRC), it's hard to
say. Part of the show's "charm" (if you can call it that ... I find
it rather hokey and smarmy, myself) is the SURPRISE! at the end when
the makeover is revealed to the returning family.

But, that's the point ... it's hard to say, because we are only given
small pieces of information.

Still, I remain convinced that there are better ways to spend one's
time then in becoming incensed about what everyone else is, or isn't
doing, and imagining it's somehow directly affecting me ... at least,
not when I don't really know squat when it comes to the facts.

Speaking generally here, of course, not to anyone specifically, but,
sheesh, people ... does everything piss everyone off here abouts?
