A quarter horse is a breed developed in the U.S. that is a sprinter, I.e.
1/4 mile races. Today's quarter horses are mostly thoroughbred, but
originated from unregistered horses, I believe in Texas and surrounding
areas, that were fast in racing short distances. Some modern quarter
horses are almost pure thoroughbreds. The breed is very muscular,
especially in the hindquarters, and are used primarily as utility animals
on cattle ranches, and also for racing--there are a number of tracks in the
west that still race quarter horses and I have seen them race there.
As for the Friesians I really do not know much about them. The only live
ones I've seen were in Canada at the Royal Winter Fair many, many years
ago.. They are I believe all black. I've seen some on TV with Martha
Stewart. They are not a breed that appeals to me personally--too drafty.
They are a heavy harness horse, and I have never really enjoyed driving,
even though I have trained several young horses to drive. They have the
characteristics you describe of mane, tail, and feathering. I consider
them more of a draft breed. My favorite draft breeds are Percherons and
Clydesdales. The Friesians have come up in popularity over the last
several years and admired by many--they just don't appeal to me, so I
haven't really done any research about their background. I think they
were developed in Europe, possibly Germany, but don't quote me on that.

What is the definition of a quarter horse?
Went to the county fair this evening and saw the most amazing horse. A
Friesian. Jet Black. 17 hands tall and it seemed like he held his head so
high. Also, his mane and forelock were verrrry long. It made him look
"bad". He also had a very long tail and "feathers" around his feet. What
can you tell me about this breed?
(Don't ask me why I'm even interested. You know how horses and I don't
get along). He was just so beautiful.
