Re: Promises! Promises!

I should also mention that we have tried to find a company who would write
us fire and liability only and take our chances with the windstorm, and we
are told the law prevents them from doing that. The first time I heard that
I thought it was hogwash, but 2 other companies have told us the same. I
can get just a liability policy.

Ed, I have asked that question of every insurance company that has turned
us down. The answers I get are primarily that it is not up to "code".
This is an area where termites are a major problem, and the crawl space
supposedly makes it more likely for termites to cause damage. What they
do not consider is that the original part of our house was built in 1933,
before anybody thought of inventing codes, and was build of first-cut Dade
County Pine, which you cannot even drive a nail into and is impervious to
insect damage. But, the code says houses must be built on a concrete
slab. Our house has had 2 major renovations/additions, which are on
concrete slabs, but the original 5-room house is not. It is interesting
to note that in Hurricane Andrew, both of the recent additions to the
house were damaged, but the original part of the house was completely
sound!

We also have trouble with insurance because we have 10 acres, much of
which is under Agriculture, and a normal Homeowners Policy will not be
written for it, and Farm Bureau (whom we were insured with in NJ) turned
us down because of the "off-grade foundation."

Another company said they "might" be able to get us coverage for a minimum
of $400,000 (our house is NOT worth that much, and they don't insure land,
fencing, etc.) for a premium of $9,000 a year with a $40,000 deductible
for windstorm. Hurricane Andrew did not do $40,000 worth of damage to our
house and outbuildings.

Long answer, and a frustrating one.

I agree. The President does not have the power to enact those promises.
They are both guilty of it. And, even if the promises are desirable, the
financial mess the next President has to deal with will preclude the
common sense of enacting them. I just want my property taxes brought
down to where I won't be forced to move to someplace I don't want to move
to! They claim the house and property we bought for $250,000 is now worth
1.2 million. I can still afford the $250,000 one, but not the 1.2
million one--same house, and not in as good condition right now, and not
insurable because of a crawl space under the oldest part of the house!
That means a person can't get a mortgage, either.

Still, on the election, I'll go with the smart one.

Why would a crawl space under your house make it uninsurable?
