The ones who REALLY get socked are the people with no insurance who don't
get the same discount that the insurance companies contract for. The doc I
used to work for gave his cash patients a discount that equaled the discount
the insurance companies get, and it was a rude shock to me to find out that
most places don't do that. I guess they have to cover the shortfall
somehow, but geez!!!

You should get an EOB that clearly shows how much insurance paid on
the bill--probably around 60% unless Medicare is primary. If MCR is
primary, it's likely to be less than 50%.
Don't feel too bad for the hospital, though, as one of the reasons an
aspirin costs approx. $7 is to offset the write-off! <GG> It's all an
ugly numbers game...
My best friend and her husband both own 8-wheeler trucks and haul as
ICs for a local mattress company. They're in their 60s, both diabetic
with other pre-existing problems. They make outrageously good money,
but health insurance premiums would be so high for them that they opt
to fund health care costs themselves. His emergency cholecystectomy
and her detached retina hit them hard, and the hospital/doctors would
not reduce the fees to what a typical insurance would have paid. The
bill was at 100%--no negotiation and a great reluctance to accept
monthly payments!
