I don't recall having to state a party when I registered to vote. I just
registered (but that was a million years ago :) ) I am not a registered
anything. I vote all over the place. That is what all the grief was about
here when we had the "declare a party" primary. People here when bonkers
they were so pissed. Now it's top two, which is still tricky as you could
end up with the two people from one party running but it hasn't happened
yet.

Unless I registered in a party I could not vote in the primary election,
and if you don't declare your party you are registered as an independent.
I knew I could not vote in the primary, but there were other issues on the
same ballot, local issues regarding property taxes, that I absolutely
wanted to vote on, so therefore I am on the rolls as an independent. I
also am quite sure when we registered to vote they asked for party
affiliation and if you refused to give a party you are therefore
registered as an independent. They tried to get me to register for a
party, but I cannot. I am NOT a democrat. But, I am no longer a
Republican either. If the Republicans would go back to being fiscally
responsible and truly stand for the "freedom" and "less government" they
proclaim I would gladly return to the fold.
As to the "no-call list" I am aware political calls are exempt, though why
they should be is beyond me. I know if I have done business with a
company such as credit cards, they can call me, but if you call the credit
card company and ask not to receive any further calls they usually will
honor it. However I have asked them not to send me those blank checks, and
I still get them regularly which annoy me.
The sales calls I am getting are mostly for investment firms that we have
never had any business with whatsoever, and I have had a slew of them
lately. They've gotten me out of the shower, the pool, interrupted my
work and most of them you can't even talk to a person to ask to be removed
from the list. Some of the recorded spiels are illegal because they do
not disconnect when you hang up, and it is illegal to have a "canned" call
of more than 30 seconds, which many of them are.

I have always registered Independent, and I keep getting stuff from
McCain,
including the begging letter. Funny, I haven't received anything from
Obama's camp. I keep getting calls asking me to take polls and while I
answered a couple of the first ones, I am just hanging up on them now.
I
know who I am going to vote for, and it is nobody elses business and I
can't
foresee anything that would change my mind.
Barb,
I've never understood what registering as an Independent does over not
registering with any affiliation. I'm registered to vote in Texas, but
not with any affiliation.
I've also been getting a lot of sales calls, too. Doesn't do much good
to
be on the "no-call list" that I can see.
Political calls are exempt from the no-call lists. As far as sales are
concerned, a lot of companies do violate the law and should be
reported. But remember, any company that has had a 'relationship', I
think that's the term used in the law, at any time in the past two
years is also exempt. However, like you, I do wish the "do not call"
list REALLY meant DO NOT CALL!
