We eat at a certain place very frequently. DH usually does the check,
so not sure exactly what he leaves, but it's consistent. Certainly not
as high as some - our favorite waitress (now a personal friend) has
received tips of close to $100 bucks (it's not a high-end place
either). OTOH, we rarely complain about the food, are patient with
them when the kitchen is behind, and have habitually given each
employee, from bar tenders to dishwashers) a card at Christmas with
$10 in it (not much but just to show they are all important). Oh, I
also take the one gal horseback riding whenever she can get away. We
also try to make sure to let the cooks know when a given dish was
particularly good. They all seem to like getting us as their table.
As far as hair, etc., it depends. I recently stopped in a place for a
cut and had my brows done. The guy only charged me 20 bucks and then I
realized they didn't take credit cards. I didn't have the checkbook.
When I dropped in a few days later with a check (he really had no
choice but to trust me), I gave him a $10.00 tip - a bit more than I
would have normally. But, hey, the service was so cheap comparatively
I think I'll go back!
