It depends on what bug you have. Some of them can cause one loose stool
while others can cause loose bowels for a couple of weeks or more. Most of
them cause loose stools for one or two days. I have had some illnesses that
lasted for a few hours and others that caused my bowels to be loose for two
or three weeks.
You may want to try some yogart and try to eat a light diet. The yogart may
help reestablish the bacteria in your colon. I would avoid fatty foods. If
the fat is not well absorbed, it can cause diarrhea (and really stinky
diarrhea, too -- not that poop smells ever smells good). You may want to
avoid milk for a while, too. The intestinal cells that make lactase (the
enzyme that breaks down lactose) is often the last cells to come back.
However, fiber may help firm up your stools.
Don't worry, this, too, shall pass.
Did the doctor say how long the virus lasts?
Jeff
PS, this is why you should wash your hands after every time you use the
restroom. Not only does washing your hands remove the germs from your
intestines that you might have gotton on your hands, preventing your illness
from being passed to others and removing the germs that others got on their
hands and left behind, say on toilet and door handles.
