The more I read newsgroups, the more I understand the meaning of the
term "invincible ignorance".

In the mid-fourteenth century, the plague hit Europe and threw it into
chaos. Twenty-five million people died. That was 40% of the population.

Today we know its cause. The plague was carried by flea-infested rats.
However, in the mid-thirteen-hundreds, its origin was a mystery.

Europe's poor sanitary conditions exacerbated the problem.

Torah observance provides standards which somewhat protected the Jews
from the plague. Jews are required to wash before eating bread. They
must bathe at least once a week, in honor of the Sabbath. The dead must
be buried within 24 hours and may not be left to decompose. Jews must
keep a certain distance from sewage in order to recite blessings and
study Torah.

The sanitary and hygienic standards of Christian Europeans at that time
were much lower. That is why the plague did not hit the Jews as hard as
the non-Jews. Yet the Jewish people were not spared. To the contrary.
They were blamed for the plague. Some said it was God's wrath against
Christian Europe for tolerating the non-believers. Others claim that
Jewish prayers poisoned the drinking water.

Because of the plague itself and the increased persecution of Jews in
Western Europe, many of them migrated to Eastern Europe, where death
rates from the plague were only half what they were in Western Europe.

God gave circumcision to Abraham (peace be on him) as a sign of
obedience to God's will, not as a prophylatic against disease.
