There is no dividing line that says that the placenta is functioning
at one point, and then no longer at another. Well... when the
placenta is delivered is a definite moment - it's safe to say that
it's not functioning then! ;-) It's also safe to say that when the
cord isn't pulsing, that it's no longer working. But the loss of
placenta function between birth and the cord no longer pulsing is very
gradual.

We had planned to have a delayed cord cutting, but my midwives
recommended against it since I am RH- and my husband is RH+ (and our
daughter is also +). However, they did not cut and clamp until my
daughter was breathing on her own and pinked up. And, she still wound
up with jaundice (though not a serious case of it, and a few hours in
a sunny window took care of it).
