Good point, although "doing well" is subjective, and there are many
physicians in our area who are contemplating career changes. The cost of
malpractice insurance is so high that many cannot continue providing certain
services (for example, the average cost for malpractice coverage in Miami is
over 200,000 a year for ob/gyn physicians. Further, several female primary
care physicians (peds, internal medicine, family medicine) in our area have
quite medicine because they made less than the cost of child care. Try
getting a high school student to dedicate 80-90 hours a week through
college, medical school, residency and practice for the next 45 years for
less than 100K a year (once in practice). There are pharmaceutical reps in
our area who make much more than pediatricians and psychiatrists. Come to
think of it, I have not seen you mention what an appropriate annual, average
salary should be for specific physicians, such as family physicians, general
surgeons, and cardiac surgeons.
