MCaid.. Studies have shown consisently over the last 20 years at
least (look at the yearly reports from the office of the Actuary of
Medicare..although it looks at the entire HC system.. in Health
Affairs magazine). The out-of-pocket expense for healthcare in the
US (INCLUDING the o-o-p part of the insurance premiums) is less than
20%. For every dollar spent, only 20 cents comes directly from the
person's pocket.
    Interesting side report. If you look at changes since '60 (when
it was just over 50%) you will note that as the %age of o-o-p
expense went down, the costs of healthcare as % of GDP went up.
