navicular fracture ?=> pseudo-arthritis

The navicular bone in my foot is fractured, and I came across the
following:

"Like carpal navicular (scaphoid) fractures, fractures of the tarsal
navicular are notorious for poor healing. Nonsurgical treatment is the
use of a non-weight-bearing cast for 6 to 8 weeks. If the fracture is
managed nonsurgically, the patient should be warned that it will take a
long time to heal. Return to sport may take 6 months. Following
immobilization, the patient should focus on gastrocnemius and Achilles
flexibility, wear good shoes, and use care in sports activity.

Painful fracture nonunion requires internal fixation. "

When I was getting the cast on I didn't ask any questions, figuring
that a broken foot was very straight forward. My GP, however, was
surprised that a surgical option was never presented to me.

What are the risks for having this bone "die"? What can I do to
mitigate those risks? The cast was made on 5 October 2005 and comes
off 31 October 2005, and I'm still having pain. I'll go see the GP
soon, but am a bit concerned about long term repercussions.

Would it have made a difference to have this surgery before having the
cast put on, assuming the bone doesn't heal, or heals such that there's
a "joint" in the middle of the bone? It never occured to me that a
bone might not heal.

Thanks,

Thufir
