Before I went to nursing school, I typed medical notes for 10 years,
and I noticed that when a doc sees a patient who gives a globally
positive review of systems (i.e., a patient who has virtually every
symptom the doc asks about), the doc usually charts "somatization,"
presumably without communicating this to the patient.

What is somatization? (somatization disorder is also called Briquet's
syndrome)

Many people with somatization have post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD) as the root cause:

Have you had a traumatic event at any time in your past? A talking
therapist who is not specifically trained to treat PTSD will not help
you if that is your problem. You can probably get a referral at this
link to a trained therapist in your area. (Maybe not if you live in a
rural area.)

This is kind of interesting, and right on point too.

Here's a study that backs up my contention that PTSD (specifically
abuse) is related to Briquet's syndrome (AKA somatization disorder)
