How Contagious is the Flu?

If a bird flu pandemic strikes, and assuming it's as contagious as the
average flu bug, will it even threaten those who stay at home for the 2
months or so that a pandemic is affecting a particular town?

I am single, live in a small town and can easily e-mail my work to the
office. I have a good supply of food stored. That being the case, I can
easily arrange to simply stay at home during a pandemic.

My question is: can flu infect people who don't even leave their homes?
