brain surgery ... change habits??

my gf just recently had an accident. she fell out of a golf cart and
hit her head. they had to drill a hole and drain the fluids from her
brain to releive the pressure. its been 3 weeks and shes doing
awesome. shes out of the hospital and nearing a full recovery.

the question: being in college we used to drink and smoke alot, but
now after this accident things are different. the doctors told her
that she may not be able to drink or smoke for 2 years, but she wants
to get back into the swing of things asap.

any thoughts from anyone? should she quit all together. are the docs
being extra cautious?

thanks for your help
