Re: Low grade fever for more than 3 months (EBV?)

I had forgotten to mention that I am 20 years old and I have always been in
perfect health. I also forgot to mention that when I went to the emergency
room I had x-rays done of my chest. The all turned out clean.

thanks once again.

Hi,

In the second half on March I had a very high fever (more than 104F) with
a soar throat. I went to the emergency room and from the blood test I was
told I most definitely had a viral infection. I did not have any other
symptoms or inflamed lymph nodes.

The high fever lasted for about 3 days and then dropped down to an
oscillating fever that reached a 100F peak only once.

Throughout this time I was feeling heavily debilitated and overall just
tired.

In May, I still had a very debilitating low grade fever especially in the
afternoon with peaks at 99.5F. My doctor recommended a full blood test.
Everything turned out to be perfectly fine except for IGG CMV and IGG EBV.
They both turned out to be positive. Last time I had tested for these
antibodies was more than 3 years ago and at that time they both yielded
negative results.

Because of the blood results, my doctor told me not to worry. I was ok and
I had probably had one of those infections. He added that I didn't have to
worry about the fever as it was not a significant issue.

Between May and July (today) the fever never went away. Still today it
will reach 99.2F every single afternoon. When I wake up my body
temperature is usually at 96.34F and the same applies for when I go to
sleep. Despite the low body temperature, I wake up every morning
experiencing chills. This feeling of fever increases during the day as my
body temperature rises and makes me feel quite uncomfortable. The only
time of the day I feel well is at night.

This feeling of chills started about one week before I had that 3-day high
fever back in March.

The only thing that allowed me to feel slightly better was Roxithromycin
(I took it a few weeks ago). While I was on it, my body temperature did
not seem to go above 98.6F. As soon as I completed the prescription, I
started feeling just like before.

Is it possible that EBV (or CMV) is at the cause of all this even after
more than three months? Is it possible that one of these viruses is still
slightly inflaming my lymph nodes and that Roxithromycin appeared to work
because it temporarily took away inflammation from them?

My doctor said that he could not feel any inflamed lymph nodes in my neck.
However, considering the low nature of my fever, is it possible that an
ultrasound would be necessary to detect the presence of inflammation.

Last but not least, how long do you think I will still have to cope with
this fever? Any antiviral remedies I could suggest to my doctor (i.e.
Aciclovir)?

Overall I don't feel tired. I just feel quite debilitated by the fever.

Thanks a lot to anyone who can help!

-Luca

PS Personal anecdotes about EBV or CMV are very welcome!
