Um, doc, the only places in the world where smallpox still exists are
germ warfare laboratories and other such research facilities. There
is no wild smallpox anywhere, and hasn't been in over 20 years.
My research tells me that the last "wild" cases were in the seventies
in Bangladesh, but that there was an "escape" of (laboratory) virus in
Birmingham, England, in 1978 and there is still the potential for more
of such.
It is my understanding that the U. S. military still vaccinates its
members for smallpox, and that the vaccine (Vaccinia) is being
stockpiled for emergency use (there was some talk about "diluting" it
to make the supply go farther).
The above suggests to me that smallpox is far from being a "dead
issue".
