What happens when a hip replacement gives out?

Hello,
My Dad's hip replacement seems to be failing after about 25 years. He's in
pain, but we're not sure if this is an emergency or not. What kind of damage
can one do to one's self trying to amble about on a failing artificial hip?
Any info or links would be much appreciated!!
