polyethylene glycol

I am trying to find out what the original source of polyethylene glycol is.
Is it a petroleum product?
Also, though they say it is inert and not absorbed by the body, I have also
read that it can cause kidney irritation. Just cause it isn't absorbed
doesn't mean it can't do damage passing through.
Anyone know more?
