To diagnose renal papillary necrosis or analgesic nephropathy, tests (urine
and renal biopsy) must be done by a nephrologist, not someone hoping to
self-diagnose by reading things they don't understand.

I'm not hoping to self-diagnose. I am looking for information to make
a decision whether or not to discuss this with my doctor. Not that the
docs I've encountered take kindly to information brought in by their
patients...

If you're abusing analgesics, then yes, you should.
