I'm a 44 YO male in good heath except... I have a problem with periodic
episodes of rapid heartbeat. I've been tested for this that and the
other thing. All negative. My GP is recommending Zolft. Anyone have an
opinion? Let me add that I'm a very happy person who takes enjoyment in
all that I do, even my job. There's nothing that I'm the least bit
stressed over. My heart just beats fast from time to time.
Interestingly enough I have an older brother who suffers from the same
exact thing. Anyone know if periodic rapid heartbeat can eventually
enlarged heart. My BP is normal. My echocardiogram shows normal heart
size... for now. Should I fool with the Zoloft? This is the second
Doctor to recommend it by the way.
Thanks,
Fred
I've had this problem and found that my potassium was on bottom end of the
normal range. Typically, 500 mg of potassium would bring an elivated heart
rate back to normal in less than 30 minutes. You didn't say how high your
heart rate would go, but I was dealing with a 25-30 point above normal rate
when my potassium was low. For most of this year, I've been taking 3 grams
(30 pills) of potassium and 5 sets of blood work have shown a potassium
level between 4.1 and 4.5 which is right in the middle of the normal range
or somewhat less.

Pramesh,
We discussed this subject in another newsgroup. I recall four of the
things that can cause low potassium levels. There may be other causes that
I do not know about. I am not a doctor.
1. Hyperaldosteronism
2. Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis
3. Use of some types of diuretics and blood pressure medications.
4. High Cortisol levels
I hope this helps,
Jason
