I havent had it but I know people who had. It similar to hernia
surgery but its even simpler - because all they do is drain some fluid
from your scrotum and sew you back up. However, how long its going to
hurt varies. Some people are up and about the next day or the day
after. Most people usually go home within 1-2 days if not the same
day. You'll probably get a week's worth of pain pills and typically
that would be enough. If you're relatively healthy and take care of

Yikes! One or two days in the hospital for a hydrocelectomy? More typically
1-2 hours.

And no, it's not just draining fluid - thehydrocelesac has to be removed
or thehydrocelewill recur. The only reason to do a hydrocelectomy through
a hernia incision is if the surgeon thinks there's a hernia in addition to
thehydrocele, or if the ultrasound indicates that there's a testicular
tumor. If not, it would be done trans-scrotally.

My husband has one that he refuses to have removed. How large does the
incision need to be? Is general or local anesthesia used? What is
recovery like in terms of pain/discomfort and healing time?

Thanks for the feedback, every kernal is being devoured as Feb 8th
approaches at what seems tobe warp speed.

I have been concerned about hernia complications--I've had several
hernia repairs on the same side as the hydrocele--and have raised this
concern with my uro. All he said is that if he gets in there, sees a
hernia, he will "fix that too". I told him one repair was with mesh he
said then I'll just overlay some more mesh. Hopefully that will not be
necessary.

Marcia I have been putting off this surgery for years because I was
hoping to save all future surgical procedures for far more "dangerous"
conditions (I also have an enlarged prostate which has been carefully
evaluated//biopsied by my urologist). I really hope to be back on here
posting soon after the 8th telling you your H should get it done
because, as one poster suggested, it really turned out to be "no big
thing--pun certainly not intended.

We shall see soon enough.

Again still hoping that someone who has recently gone through the
hydrocelectomy procedure finds this Thread too but thanks again to

I know about a patient that had a hydocele. The doctor guessed that it was
probable caused by an infection so he gave the patient a prescription for
penicillin. The doctor was correct. The patient came back about two weeks
later and the patient no longer had a hydrocele. Did your doctor treat you
for an infection? If not, you may want to consider asking the doctor to try
that option. It's my opinion that surgery should be the last option--not the
first option.
