Shaking off

I am a 62 year-old man.
Yesterday evening, at about 22:00 I was watching a DVD with my wife
and I noticed that I had a few very tiny aches and pains - mainly in
my back and arms.
My wife went to bed at about 23:30 and I went to bed just before
midnight.
By this time the aches were more definite and I was shivering.
I turned the radio on quietly to listen to the news and when I turned
it off at about 00:10 my hand was shaking so badly it took me three
tries to turn it off.
I spent a restless night, continually talking and muttering in my
sleep.
However, when I awoke at 06:15 I was all better. All my symptoms were
gone, but I was feeling slightly "yucky" - like a slight hang-over
perhaps.
My wife told me that I stopped talking in my sleep at about 04:30.
I assume that I had "shaken off" a cold. I have had this kind of
experience a few times before in my life.
My questions are:
- how common is this sort of thing?
- is there a medical name for this phenomenon?
- is it called "shaking off" because of the shivering?
