recovery from a broken neck

Hi,

My brother recently broke his neck, the C2 odontoid. Closed, between
a type 2 and a type 3. They first attempted to fix it by inserting a
screw, but that failed. They took the screw back out and put him in a
halo brace.

The halo was put on after over two weeks of the original break. I
don't know what to expect. They said the bones might not achieve
union and they'll have to go in and fuse his c2 and c1 together.
There's stuff online saying they have electrical/ultrasonic/
vibrational devices that promote bone growth/re-union. Does any body
know what actually works for encouraging bone growth and what are the
probabilities that he'll make a full recovery and avoid having his
spine fused?

If the c1 and c2 are fused, will he be unable to turn his head enough
to drive?

Thanks,
barnetto
