Assault Rifle:

Rifle, has rifling.

Assault,designed for the assault, basically has a bayonet or some other
means to be use in the asault.

So the first rifle with a bayonet is an assault rifle, but then guns
like a brown bess smooth bore are assault rifles, just assault weapons
or what?
