Who cares about frontal area? That only adds to problems with armor
penetration. If you want to get into the pissing contest of tumbling
and fragmentation look at the West German Steel jacketd stuff that was
around some years back ( the stuff with the .4 mm Jacket), it
absolutely disintegrated when it tumbled. There is a balance between
weight of ammo, felt recoil and operator fatigue, and volume of fire
that can be maintained. I think we have all come to the understanding
that reliable wounding is dependent on one thing, how big the wound
channel is in the intended victim. There are two ways of getting
there, Big slow rock (think .45 Auto) or self destructing rock at
ridiculous velocity( think 5.56mm M193).

How many shots do I get? That factors in, If I can spray a load of
7.62x25 at 50 Yds or less ( and you are within those 50 Yds), I'll
probably take that over a .458 Win Mag that will punch your lights out
at 1000 Yds.
