Sounds like a fume extractor.
This is an annular chamber surrounding the barrel, connected to the bore by
holes drilled through the barrel . When a shell is accelerated up the bore,
it compresses the air in front which of it, and fills the fume extractor
with compressed air. As soon as the shell leaves the gun, the pressure in
the bore drops to normal air pressure but the bore is left full of
combustion gases (unpleasant to breathe). The air in the fume extractor then
expands and helps blow the fumes out of the barrel. Otherwise when the
breech is opened to reload, noxious fumes get into the crew compartment.
