Main Gun Sights

I have heard debates among armor types about the advantages of various
generations of sight systems, with regard to slave direction.
Some prefer to have the tube slaved to the sight,
and others the sight slaved to the tube.
I have never fully understood the reasoning of these debates, and would
appreciate any enlightenment.
( My only experience is with the M1 )
