With the magnetic field tuned right the projectile should never touch
anything. This is very similar to what particle accelerators do but
with a much shorter distance you need a stronger magnetic field. I
could not find the story, but over a year ago I read a story about a
laser and a plasma producing 1 million + gauss. I would explore these
avenues.
