This should not be "stunning" at all....the concept of big-deck
amphibs with substantial aviation capabilities is a very old one. USN
converted their first ship of this sort in 1955, followed that with
three converted fleet carriers in the late 1950's, commissioned the
first new-construction ship of the type in 1961, and has since built
19 new-construction LPH/LHA/LHD types of three classes.

The Royal Navy started similar conversions in the late 1950's.

However, these are NOT aircraft carriers in a conventional sense,
since they carry a huge amount of cargo and their aircraft are
principally intended for the landing and support of troops.
