O.K., so there is a large gas pressure right behind the shell when fired.
This pressure presumably enters the chamber provided by the bustle.
But, this chamber, as I understand it, is not vented; just connected to the
barrel interior by some ports.
So, the pressure in the chamber is probably about the same as the pressure
behind the shell ?
Therefore, how does it work; I can't see how if it's about the same pressure
as what's in the barrel after the shell leaves the barrel it does anything ?
Might some please explain in detail how this functions.

The ports are angled forward.
When the shell leaves the barrel the pressure drops.
High pressure gas from the extractor drives forward
= extracting = gas from the rear of the barrel.
Momentarily gas pressure in front of the breech is
- lower - than in the turret.
Open the breech NOW and fumes go out the barrel instead
of the turret.
So what size extractor / port design / position = timing margin.
