If you could create an airtight seal and pump out all the air, and if
the structure was strong enough to keep out the outside air, then this
may work. Dirigibles are currently filled with something because they
need it to stop the structure from imploding. This however could just
use vacuum, and hence would be more efficient, and has no danger of
exploding (like hydrogen) and looks like it would have several
advantages over current dirigibles.

Of course a hole in the seal could still cause the structure to fall.
This could possibly be fixed by having several hundred sealed
compartments, which would allow time for the hole to be repaired.
