Here's an article discussing why the protein channels in cellulular
membranes can effect active transport against a concentration gradient:

So if these nano-peristaltic movements from the protein channel can
move molecules across it, then could this effect be replicated in
lab-on-a-chip devices?
Could we somehow arrange these proteins across an artificial membrane
for fuel cells or for sequestration/filtration of substances?
Proteins seem easy to manufacture via biological methods, but could
these proteins be harnessed for our own industrial purposes?
